Usage Note
Abbattimento covers both a physical act — knocking down a wall or culling an animal (abbattimento di un albero = felling a tree) — and a psychological state of low spirits or dejection. The two senses are quite different; context makes the meaning clear. The related verb is abbattere (to knock down; to depress), and the reflexive abbattersi means to become despondent.
Examples
"Dopo la sconfitta sentiva un profondo abbattimento."
Natural Translation
After the defeat he felt a deep despondency.
