abito

suit

noun AH-bee-toh Rare

Origin: Latin habitus, bearing, condition

Also means

dress

Usage Note

Abito can refer to a man's suit (abito da uomo) or a woman's dress (abito da donna), and more generally to 'clothing' or 'garment'. Note the deceptive overlap: l'abito non fa il monaco ('the habit/dress does not make the monk') uses the same word. Do not confuse with the verb abitare (to live/dwell) — they share a Latin root but mean completely different things.

Examples

"Indossa sempre un abito elegante al lavoro."

Natural Translation

He always wears an elegant suit to work.
