appropriare
to appropriate; to take possession of
verb ahp-proh-pree-AH-reh Rare
Origin: From Latin 'appropriare', from 'ad-' + 'proprius' (one's own).
Usage Note
Appropriare is most commonly used reflexively as appropriarsi di qualcosa — to appropriate or seize something for oneself. The non-reflexive appropriare (to assign, to earmark) is rarer and more formal. In legal Italian, appropriazione indebita is the offence of misappropriation of funds. It takes avere in non-reflexive use and essere in reflexive use (si è appropriato).
Examples
"Si è appropriato dei fondi dell'azienda."
Natural Translation
He appropriated the company's funds.
Literal Translation
He-reflexive is appropriated of-the funds of-the company.
