Autoritario describes a person, style, or regime that demands strict obedience and allows little freedom. It is distinct from autorevole (authoritative, commanding respect through competence) — a common mix-up. Un padre autoritario is domineering; un padre autorevole is respected. The noun is autoritarismo.
