Usage Note

Bambinaia is the traditional Italian word for a woman who cares for children in a private household — a live-in nanny or nursemaid. The more modern term baby-sitter (borrowed from English) is also common for hourly childcare. The masculine counterpart is rare but theoretically bambinaio.
