camuffare

to disguise

verb kah-moof-FAH-reh Rare

Origin: French camoufler (to disguise)

Also means

to camouflage

Usage Note

Camuffare is a regular first-conjugation verb. The reflexive camuffarsi means 'to disguise oneself' (si è camuffato da poliziotto = 'he disguised himself as a police officer'). It carries a stronger sense of deliberate deception than mascherare, which can simply mean 'to mask'.

Examples

"Si è camuffato con un cappello e occhiali."

Natural Translation

He disguised himself with a hat and glasses.
