Usage Note

Carabina is a short-barrelled rifle or carbine. Note that carabiniere (the Italian military police officer) takes its name from this weapon — early carabinieri were cavalry armed with carbines. The plural le carabine is regular. In everyday speech the word appears mostly in hunting and military contexts.
