Combattente derives from combattere (to fight) and refers to an active participant in armed conflict. It is gender-common — il combattente / la combattente — using the same form for masculine and feminine. Reduci e combattenti is a set phrase referring to war veterans. It differs from soldato (soldier) in that it emphasises active fighting rather than rank or service.
