costruire

to build

verb koh-stroo-EE-reh Common

Origin: Latin construere (to heap together, build)

Also means

to construct

Usage Note

Costruire is regular in meaning but belongs to the -isc- group: present-tense forms insert -isc- before the ending — costruisco, costruisci, costruisce — except in the noi/voi persons. It takes avere as its auxiliary. Contrast edificare, which is more formal or literary.

Examples

"Vogliamo costruire una casa nuova."

Natural Translation

We want to build a new house.
