dottorato
doctorate
noun dot-toh-RAH-toh Rare
Origin: From Medieval Latin doctoratus, from doctor (teacher).
Also means
PhD
Usage Note
Dottorato (full form dottorato di ricerca) is Italy's highest academic degree, equivalent to a PhD. The person holding it is a dottore di ricerca or simply dottorando while enrolled. Note that in Italy, dottore/dottoressa is also the honorific for anyone with a bachelor's or master's degree (laurea), so the title alone does not imply a doctorate — context matters.
Examples
"Ha completato il dottorato in tre anni."
Natural Translation
She completed her doctorate in three years.
