Origin: From Latin excellens, present participle of excellere (to surpass).
Usage Note
Eccellente is invariable for gender (same form for m and f) but has a plural eccellenti. It is a strong adjective of praise, stronger in register than buono. The related noun eccellenza is the honorific (Sua Eccellenza) used for high officials and bishops.
