fotografia
photograph; photography
noun foh-toh-GRAH-fyah Less Common
Origin: From Greek 'phōs/phōtos' (light) + 'graphia' (writing).
Usage Note
Fotografia covers both a physical photo and the art of photography. In casual speech it is shortened to foto, which is invariable: una foto, le foto (never fotos). Foto is feminine despite ending in -o, because it is an abbreviation of fotografia. The photographer is il/la fotografo/a.
Examples
"Ha scattato una bellissima fotografia."
Natural Translation
She took a beautiful photograph.
