Garante is both a person who provides a guarantee (e.g., a guarantor for a lease) and an institutional watchdog. Italy has official Garanti for specific sectors: the Garante della Privacy (data protection authority) and the Garante della Concorrenza (competition authority). The word is invariable for gender (il garante, la garante) and comes from garantire (to guarantee).
