giustificare

to justify

verb joo-stee-fee-KAH-reh Less Common

Usage Note

Giustificare uses avere in compound tenses. It means to provide a reason or excuse (giustificare un'assenza = to excuse an absence) or to show something is warranted (i risultati giustificano il costo). The reflexive giustificarsi means 'to excuse oneself' or 'to account for one's actions'. Note the 'g' before 'i' gives the 'j' sound.

Examples

"Non riesci a giustificare quel comportamento."

Natural Translation

You cannot justify that behaviour.
