Usage Note

Idolo can mean a religious idol (a worshipped image or figure) or, in modern usage, a pop idol or adored celebrity — è l'idolo dei giovani (he is the idol of young people). The plural is gli idoli. The verb idolatrare (to idolize) is derived from it.
