Usage Note

Illegittimità is invariable in the plural. In constitutional law illegittimità costituzionale is a ruling by Italy's Constitutional Court that a law violates the Constitution — a fundamental legal concept. It can also mean illegitimacy of birth (now rare) or simply the unlawful nature of an act. The stress falls on the final syllable.
