Usage Note

Inadempiente describes a party that has failed to fulfil a contractual or legal obligation. It can function as an adjective (la parte inadempiente = the defaulting party) or as a noun (l'inadempiente = the defaulter). The related noun is inadempienza (non-compliance, default). This word is common in legal and commercial Italian — a false friend warning: it does not mean 'non-adept' but specifically 'in breach of an obligation'.
