infanzia

childhood

noun een-FAHN-tsyah Less Common

Origin: From Latin infantia, from infans (unable to speak, infant).

Also means

infancy

Usage Note

Infanzia is a feminine noun (l'infanzia, no plural in its abstract sense). It covers the entire period of early childhood, not just infancy: durante la mia infanzia means 'during my childhood.' For a concrete group of children, Italians use i bambini rather than a plural of infanzia. The related adjective is infantile (childlike, childish).

Examples

"Ha trascorso la sua infanzia in campagna."

Natural Translation

She spent her childhood in the countryside.
