infuriare

to rage, to fly into a fury

verb een-foo-RYAH-reh Rare

Also means

to rage (of a storm)

Usage Note

Infuriare is used both for people who lose their temper and for natural phenomena that rage violently: il mare infuria ('the sea rages'). When used reflexively as infuriarsi, it focuses on a person becoming enraged: si è infuriato con me ('he flew into a rage at me'). It takes the auxiliary essere in compound tenses when reflexive, avere in the transitive sense of 'to enrage someone'.

Examples

"La tempesta infuriava sulla costa."

Natural Translation

The storm was raging along the coast.
