Usage Note

Iridato literally means 'bearing the iris colors' (rainbow-striped). In Italian sports journalism it is the standard term for a world champion, because the rainbow jersey (maglia iridata) is awarded to world champions in cycling, athletics, and other UCI/IAAF disciplines. Outside sport, it can describe iridescent or rainbow hues.
