Usage Note
Marcare covers both physical marking (marcare un pacco — to mark a package) and sports scoring (marcare un gol — to score a goal). In football contexts it also means 'to mark' an opposing player. It takes avere as its auxiliary. Do not confuse with segnare, which is more common for 'to score' in everyday speech.
