Usage Note

Maxitangente is a compound of maxi- ('very large') + tangente ('bribe, kickback'). It became prominent in the early 1990s during Italy's Tangentopoli ('Bribesville') corruption scandal. The word is distinctly Italian journalistic coinage and has no direct English equivalent. The plural is maxitangenti.
