Medioevo (also written Medio Evo) refers to the historical period roughly from the 5th to the 15th century. The adjective is medievale ('medieval'). In informal speech Italians sometimes use it hyperbolically to mean 'stone age': siamo nel medioevo! ('we're in the dark ages!').
