miriade
myriad, vast number
noun mee-RYAH-deh Rare
Origin: From Greek myrias (ten thousand), via Latin *myriad-.
Usage Note
Miriade is feminine and is typically used in the plural, miriadi, to convey an uncountably large quantity: miriadi di stelle ('myriads of stars'). Although its Greek origin meant exactly ten thousand, in modern Italian it is purely hyperbolic. It is always followed by di + noun.
Examples
"C'erano miriadi di insetti nel prato."
Natural Translation
There were myriads of insects in the meadow.
Literal Translation
There-were myriads of insects in-the meadow.
