Modificato is the past participle of modificare (to modify), used as an adjective. It appears commonly in technical and legal language, such as organismo geneticamente modificato (GMO — genetically modified organism). When used predicatively with essere, it describes a state: il contratto è stato modificato (the contract has been modified).
