Montaggio in film means 'editing' (the cutting and assembly of footage), not 'directing' or 'filming'. It is also used literally for physical assembly (montaggio dei mobili = 'furniture assembly'). The film-editing sense is particularly prominent in Italian cinema criticism. The person who does it is a montatore / montatrice.
