omettere

to omit

verb oh-MET-teh-reh Rare

Origin: From Latin omittere.

Usage Note

Omettere is conjugated like mettere (irregular past participle omesso). It means to leave something out, whether deliberately or carelessly: omettere un dettaglio ('to omit a detail'). In legal language omettere di fare something means 'to fail to do' it, which can carry criminal liability (omissione di soccorso, 'failure to render assistance'). It takes avere as auxiliary.

Examples

"Ha omesso un dettaglio importante."

Natural Translation

He omitted an important detail.

Literal Translation

He-has omitted a detail important.
