orribile

horrible; dreadful

adjective or-REE-bee-leh Rare

Origin: Latin horribilis, from horrere (to bristle)

Usage Note

Orribile intensifies disgust or disapproval and is very common in informal speech — che tempo orribile! (what dreadful weather!). It is invariable for gender (un film orribile / una scena orribile) but changes for plural: orribili. Stronger than brutto (ugly/bad) but interchangeable with terribile in casual use.

Examples

"Ho avuto un'orribile giornata al lavoro."

Natural Translation

I had a horrible day at work.
