Usage Note
Padre is masculine; la madre is the feminine counterpart. The shortened affectionate form is papà (dad), which always carries a written accent and stresses the final syllable. Padre is also used as a title for a priest (Padre Pio) and figuratively for a founding figure (i padri della patria = the founding fathers).
Examples
"Mio padre lavora in centro."
Natural Translation
My father works in the city centre.
