rima

noun REE-mah Rare

Origin: Latin rima (crack, fissure); the 'rhyme' sense entered via medieval poetry.

Also means

Usage Note

Rima most commonly means 'rhyme' in literary contexts — fare rima con means 'to rhyme with.' The older anatomical/geological sense (a narrow fissure) survives in specialized writing. The plural rime is regular but can also mean 'rhymes' (a poetry collection), as in Petrarch's Rime.

Examples

"La sua poesia è piena di rime."
