Rinnovare is used for renewing a contract, subscription, or passport (rinnovare il passaporto) and also for renovating a space (rinnovare un appartamento). The noun rinnovo (renewal) appears in many bureaucratic contexts. The double 'n' is important: rinnovare, not rinovare.
