Saggista is an epicene noun — the same form is used for both male and female essayists; gender is marked only by the article (il saggista, la saggista). The plural is saggisti (m) or saggiste (f). It refers specifically to writers of saggi (essays or non-fiction essays), distinct from romanziere (novelist) or poeta (poet).
