Usage Note

Scoraggiare is the direct opposite of incoraggiare ('to encourage'). The reflexive scoraggiarsi ('to become discouraged / lose heart') is very common: non scoraggiarti! = 'don't get discouraged!' The verb takes avere when transitive and essere when reflexive. The ggi cluster is pronounced 'j' (as in 'jet').
