Usage Note

Sentimento is the word for a deeper, more lasting emotional feeling, as opposed to emozione (a momentary emotion). The plural i sentimenti often refers to romantic feelings — esprimere i propri sentimenti = 'to express one's feelings'. The idiom fare del sentimentalismo means 'to be sentimental' or 'to wallow in sentiment'.
