Sfondo literally means the back of a pictorial space (from s- + fondo, bottom/depth). In computing, lo sfondo del desktop is the desktop wallpaper. It also carries figurative weight: sullo sfondo della guerra means 'against the backdrop of the war'. The plural is regular: gli sfondi.
