Usage Note
Tonto is a colloquial word for dumb or foolish — slightly milder than stupido and often used affectionately or jokingly: non fare il tonto ('don't play dumb'). The feminine is tonta, plural tonti / tonte. Note: in Spanish tonto means the same thing, but in English 'Tonto' is a proper name — not a cognate.
