Trama originally referred to the weft threads running crosswise in weaving — giving rise to its figurative sense of a plot or scheme woven together. It is the standard word for the plot of a film, novel, or play (la trama del romanzo), as well as a conspiracy (una trama politica). The plural is regular: trame.
