agrume

citrus fruit

noun ah-GROO-meh Rare

Usage Note

Agrume is the collective term for citrus fruits (arancia, limone, pompelmo, etc.). In everyday Italian it is most often used in the plural gli agrumi when referring to the category as a whole. Note the masculine gender despite the -e ending, which can trick learners expecting feminine. Succo di agrumi means citrus juice.

Examples

"Gli agrumi sono ricchi di vitamina C."

Natural Translation

Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C.
