aia

farmyard

noun AH-yah Rare

Origin: From Latin area (open space, threshing floor).

Also means

threshing floor

Usage Note

Aia is feminine: l'aia. It originally referred to the packed-earth threshing floor at the centre of a farmstead, and by extension the whole farmyard. It is a rural and literary word rarely used in urban contexts. The proverb non si vende la pelle dell'orso prima di averlo preso often evokes the aia setting.

Examples

"Le galline razzolano nell'aia al mattino."

Natural Translation

The hens scratch around in the farmyard in the morning.
