Usage Note

Altruismo is the principle of caring for others' well-being above one's own. It was coined in the 19th century by French philosopher Auguste Comte and entered Italian from French. The related adjective/noun is altruista (altruistic; an altruist), which is invariable in gender. Its antonym is egoismo (egoism).
