annuire

to nod, to nod in agreement

verb an-noo-EE-reh Rare

Origin: From Latin annuere (to nod assent), from ad- + nuere (to nod).

Usage Note

Annuire is an intransitive verb conjugated with avereha annuito ('he nodded'). It specifically means to nod in assent or acknowledgment, not to shake the head. The root nu- is the same as in English 'innuendo' (a hint by nodding). For a nod as a gesture without implied agreement, Italians may also use fare un cenno con la testa.

Examples

"Ha annuito in silenzio senza dire nulla."

Natural Translation

He nodded silently without saying anything.
