Usage Note

Annunciazione with a capital 'A' refers specifically to the Christian feast of the Angel Gabriel's announcement to Mary (25 March). As a common noun (un'annunciazione) it denotes a painting or artwork depicting that scene — one of the most frequent subjects in Italian Renaissance art. The alternate Italian spelling Annunziazione also occurs.
