Origin: From Church Latin 'archiepiscopus', from Greek 'archi-' (chief) + 'episkopos' (bishop).

Usage Note

Arcivescovo is the Catholic title for the head of an archdiocese. The feminine equivalent (arcivescova) exists but is rare; arcivescovo is standard. In address, the formal title is Sua Eccellenza Reverendissima. The corresponding seat is the arcidiocesi, and the cathedral church is often the duomo or cattedrale.
