apparire

appear

verb ahp-pah-REE-reh Less Common

Origin: from Latin 'apparere'

Also means

seem

Usage Note

Apparire is irregular (appare, apparve, apparso) and takes essere, so the past participle agrees with the subject: è apparsa una stella. Beyond physically appearing, it means 'to seem', as in appare stanco ('he seems tired'). It is a touch more literary than sembrare.

Examples

"All'improvviso apparve un'ombra."

Natural Translation

Suddenly a shadow appeared.

Literal Translation

At-the-sudden appeared a-shadow.
