armata

army

noun ahr-MAH-tah Rare

Also means

fleet

Usage Note

Armata can mean a large army or, historically, a naval fleet — l'armata spagnola (the Spanish Armada). As a past participle of armare it also means 'armed' (donna armata = armed woman), so context matters. L'esercito is the more common word for the modern standing army.

Examples

"L'armata nemica si avvicinava alla città."

Natural Translation

The enemy army was approaching the city.
