attuale

current

adjective aht-TWA-leh Common

Origin: Medieval Latin actualis (pertaining to acts), from actus

Also means

present, up-to-date

Usage Note

Attuale is a major false friend: it does NOT mean 'actual' (= reale, vero) but 'current' or 'present-day'. L'attuale presidente means 'the current president', not 'the actual president'. This trips up English speakers constantly. The adverb attualmente means 'currently', again NOT 'actually' (for 'actually' use in realtà or a dire il vero).

Examples

"La situazione attuale è complicata."

Natural Translation

The current situation is complicated.
