Usage Note
Avvelenamento refers to poisoning — both accidental and intentional. Common collocations: avvelenamento da cibo ('food poisoning'), avvelenamento da monossido di carbonio ('carbon monoxide poisoning'). The plural avvelenamenti is regular. The verb is avvelenare ('to poison'). Do not confuse with intossicazione, which can also mean food poisoning but implies toxic rather than strictly poison-based causes.
Examples
"Il cane è morto per avvelenamento accidentale."
Natural Translation
The dog died of accidental poisoning.
