Usage Note
Calcolatore originally meant a person who calculates, then shifted to mean a computing machine. In modern Italian it most often refers to a computer in formal or technical contexts (calcolatore elettronico), while calcolatrice (f) is the word for a pocket calculator. A calcolatore is also used metaphorically to describe a coldly calculating person. Note that computer (invariable, masculine) has largely replaced calcolatore in everyday speech.
Examples
"Il calcolatore ha elaborato i dati in pochi secondi."
Natural Translation
The computer processed the data in a few seconds.
