Usage Note

Cavaliere has two main uses: a medieval knight and an Italian honorific title (similar to 'Sir'), awarded by the state as Cavaliere della Repubblica. The plural is cavalieri. Note that in chess the knight is il cavallo (the horse), not il cavaliere.
