Usage Note
Ciabatta literally means 'slipper' and the famous flat bread was named for its slipper-like shape. In everyday speech ciabatta most often refers to the worn-down slipper you shuffle around the house in. An old or battered car can also be called una ciabatta colloquially. The plural is ciabatte.
